Many of the revolutionary ideas of the early modern age were born in the classroom. Early modern schools and universities not only transmitted well-established philosophical and scientific traditions, but also often served as innovative ’places of knowledge’ (lieux de savoir) where new ideas were brought up in scholarly debates.
The aim of this conference is to explore the culture of scholarly disagreements in early modern education. What kind of written sources survive about debates in 15th, 16th, and 17th century academia? What were the typical written and oral genres of debate in schools, and what was their role in the educational systems of Catholic and Protestant Europe? How were scholarly uncertainties dealt with in education, and how was the possibility of multiple truths presented in class? What was the social context of arguments, and what were the personal consequences of exploring new ideas in arts and sciences education?
We invite papers on various facets of debates early modern in schools. These include the analyses of study notebooks or textbooks presenting scholarly disagreements, the history of revolutionary ideas in arts and sciences as they appeared in schools, and studies of career paths of innovative professors and scholarly renegades in early modern Europe.
